Impact is one of many terms used to describe a type of event inherent to the corps style of marching music. Although impacts are a part of nearly all corps style shows, there does not appear to be a universally accepted definition. Through interviews with Key Poulan and Brian Youngblood, and by gathering data, I formed a working definition for impacts: An impact occurs when the entire brass section of a corps plays at a relatively high volume at a point of musical "arrival." The Impact continues until the volume decreases substantially. I apply this definition of impact to The Cadet's 2011 program "Between Angels and Demons" and Phantom Regiment's 2011 program "Juliet." This study seeks to better understand impacts through analyzing how dissonance, harmony, instrumentation, texture and volume change in the immediate context of impacts from these shows. This study concludes with a discussion of the nature of arrivals the quality of impacts as a point of change, and the possibility of formal and structural significance of impacts.
