dc.description.abstractFilm and literature have fascinated audiences for as long as each respective form has been available, but often times for differing reasons. Whereas each form has intricate and unique ways of conveying imagery, crafting narrative, and exposing realities about our world, both mediums are incredibly distinct from one another. Because of these differences, finding similarities that give equal merit to both art forms can be an arduous task. Fortunately, by looking at the ways each medium approaches landscape through the lens of semiotic theory, a level foundation emerges that reveals the unique ways each medium is able to engage with place. By assessing the specific methods prevalent in P.D James's 1992 novel The Children of Men and Alfonso Cuarón's 2006 film Children of Men, film and literature will display their unique ways of interacting with the inherent gap understood through semiotic theory. Eventually this will reveal literature and film's unique ways of communication as well as their ability to allow readers and viewers to insert their own experiences into a specific text and interpret the semiotic discourse for themselves.
