| dc.description.abstract | This document explores how Iranian native composers who have studied Western classical music incorporate elements of Iranian classical music in their compositions. The first section covers the history of Western music in Iran, spanning from the early 1910s to 1979. It includes charts, references and resources for further study. The next section provides biographical information about Kouchyar Shahroudi (b.1959) and Kiawasch SahebNassagh (b.1968), establishing the historical placement of each composer within the context of Iranian and Western music. The author includes a structural analysis of the pieces Danses Mystiques (2017) by Kouchyar Shahroudi and Amusie (2018) by Kiawasch SahebNassagh, addressing the question of "Iranian identity" in the music. The author provides musical examples from each piece and compares them to their Iranian classical music origins. These examples can be a motive, melody or even a textural idea. The Iranian classical music examples compare the composers' uses of the melodies with the origins of the melodies. Each composer has a different approach in forming his own hybrid Iranian-Western style of composition. The goal is to define "Iranian identity" and explore its manifestation in each composer's work. | |
