dc.description.abstractThis work of fantasy fiction deals with themes of intimacy and identity from the perspective of agender, aromantic, and asexual characters as they navigate through a society that is founded on a gender binary, romantic relationships, and sexuality. The main character, Cory, meets a non-human being that comes to be called Ae, and both discover how powerful a non-romantic, non-sexual intimacy can feel. While Cory wants leave earth with Ae to escape the limits of human biology and human society, which cause unbearable stress, others like Zoe and Aki are willing to stay within human society and make changes that will benefit everyone. Following the story is a note from the author that discusses narrative choices and rationales, fantasy genre, and media representation.
