dc.description.transcription | Dear Mr. Monnig: I would like to thank you again for the article on the Antarctica meteorites. I enjoyed reading about how the scientist’s believe the meteorites come to the surface of the blue ice fields. It will be very interesting to see the full report on the meteorites by the Japanese and American research people at some future date. I will be very interested to know the types of meteorites on classifications given to all the different falls to see how they correlate with present day falls and finds. Enclosed with this letter is the article you wanted about meteorites written by Glenn Huss. Sorry it has taken me so long to get the copy to you. However, I had been waiting for a copy machine to arrive at the Richardson library that takes excellent reproductions of pictures in articles or books. However, the copy machine did not arrive and is not likely to for some time. I went ahead and got some good copies of the article on their present copier so that I can send the article on to you for your records. It was good news to hear that you and Bob Brown had a fruitful trip on you last trip to Oklahoma. I am sure that the fragments must be down over those large remarks between highway 53 and highway 7 in Oklahoma. Hopefully, we will get to work on more survey and canvasing trips before to much longer. If my job allows me the time off to go with you on your next trip, I would like to go with you and Bob Brown. I am glad that you were able to acquire some good county maps from your friend in ardmore. I have a piece of good news. Last Friday a week ago I decided to go o a field trip to hunt arrowheads near Paris, Texas. I decided to make a quick trip by Deport, Texas to see if any fragments had been found by anyone. Much to my surprise, one small piece weighing two ounces had been found by Obie Woods, a relation to the late Jess Woods. Obie works for the city ad was getting ready to do some landscaping on the city dumps when he noticed this small nickel-iron fragment lying on the ground. Since he had seen many fragments before, he picked it up and took it back into tow with him. The fragment had one area where it had bee ground by an emory wheel. Since it was rusty on the ground surface, it must have been thrown away recently. The fragment is in excellent condition and not badly deteriorated at all. I am just glad that Obie had the knowledge to salvage the piece for us. I just wonder how many other fragments have been lost and thrown away over the years around Deport. This two ounce fragment probably was found thirty years ago since most of the rust is gone from the surface of the meteorite. I will bring it with me the next time I see you. It was a great thrill finally to acquire a nice fragment from Deport. Over the years that you collected at Deport, can you estimate the average weight of most of the fragments you were able to obtain from Deport? Would each one have averaged approximately 2, 3, 4 or 5 ounces or more? I contacted Walter Gifford about the Dam Deport is having built. The contract is to be bedded on in the very near future. Since Walter works at the city hall he will be working with the former and people bidding the dam. He is going to ask them to look out for any large pieces of iron they might push up with the bulldozers and scrapers. If any show up, he will let me know about the meteorite finds. Another good report is that some farmers from the north have come in ad bought up a lot of land around Deport. They are plowing it deeper than it has been plowed before with enormous large tractors. Depths of fifteen inches or more. Possibly some more fragments will be plowed up from that depth. Two of the farms they bought and plowed were the Ripley and Evans farms north of the Shadowland store. Did you ever obtain any fragments from those farms? If so, I plan to return to Deport in the near future and I will work on this area for us. Shouldn’t larger fragments be found farther north of the Shadowland store? I must close for now. Give my best regards to Mrs. Monnig and I hope to hear from you in the near future. Sincerely, Paul Walters | |
