dc.description.transcription | Deport Texas June 2, 19X8 Our Oscar E. Monnig Dear Sir - about Feb 1 - of this year I found a queer rock in the side of a creek wash -on draw. It was 6 feet down - in natural earth no other rock near anywhere. I could not get it out. The draw was about 8 feet deep a new draw being cut in the water. It was on the draw 1 mile east of John G. Wright store (Shadowland) on the lone cottonwood Hollow. By name I remembered it as doing something I had never seen before and told my sister with whom I live about it. I had almost forgotten it and yesterday went back and the spring rain’s which were heavy had washed it out and it was lying down stream about 5 feet washed as clean as a kin. I hauled in and weighed it up it weighs on the cotton balance 55# pounds. It is a meteorite part of the fall near Deport. It was the rarest coincident that my eyes fell on it I ever heard. I have lived in the open all my life here and have surveyed lands a lot so I look at every thing but the surprise was I never did think of a meteorite. I was thinking of our geology and work. Be glad to sell it at rate you have paid Mr. Rollings. Will tell you all. Be glad to hear from you. Yours truly R.E. Lys | |
