dc.description.transcription5-9-77 Dear Mr. Monnig: I appreciate receiving the Science news of the week copy about the Innisfree, Canada meteorite recovery. It was encouraging to hear about the meteorite being tracked down by their camera network system. I am wondering if they are continuing to look for the other fragments. The copy of the vegreville meteor sighting you sent to me on 3-2-77, stated that the meteor fragmented during flight and the fragments disappeared from view traveling together about 20 kilometers above the earth. However, possibly only one fragment was large enough to reach the earth as a collectible size piece of stone meteorite. I have been getting a strong desire to return to Deport, Texas to try and recover other nickel - iron fragments. Even though I have met with very little success so far, I do not give up very easily and feel that by continuing to work on recovering fragments will sooner or later be rewarded with success. Friday evening I called Duane White in Deport to see if by chance he had heard of any ew fragments being found. Duane had heard of no new fragments being found so I ask him about the new lake dam they are going to build above or north of Deport. Since he is on the city council, he has this type of information available for me. Dance stated that the core drilling was completed and weather conditions permitting the construction people should start on this project in about one month. The damn itself will be located about one and a quarter miles due north of the northern part of Main Street in Deport. Also it can be stated that the damn will be from one to one and one half miles miles north of the old Shadowland store. The dam would be approximately one and half miles west also of the store. My point is do you believe that the construction people could unearth large pieces of this meteorite or do you feel the dam is out of the flight area that the meteorite took over that area? I realize that I have discussed this with you on a limited basis before but in looking through your letters and my notes I failed to ind what your anwer [answer] was on it before when we discussed this issue. If you don’t mind, I would appreciate having you answer the question again for me. If at all possible, I will try to go to Deport during the time construction is started on the dam if you feel large fragments could possibly be recovered by alerting the construction crews to be on the lookout for large iron fragments. Mr. Mooning, what shape do you feel these large fragments would have on this meteorite fall? If I remember correctly, some of these framents [fragments] from this fall seemed to have some orientation about them or possibly a better word similarity of shape about them. When I first met you, and you were showing me part of your collection, you showed me a sixteen or seventeen pound iron having flight markings shaped something like a blunt bullet out of a gun. Was this particular iron from Deport or another fall area? Again I have asked you several questions which I always seemed to be doing in my letters. I want you to know that I am very grateful to you for answering my questions and being such a nice friend to me. I appreciate you and Mrs Monnig so very much. Hopefully this letter finds both of you well at this time. Please let me know Mr Monnig when your business matters let up somewhat so that I can come over and take you out to lunch and visit with you for about an hour. Any new information you receive in the future about large meteor sightings or meteorites falls will be very gratefully received by me. Thank you again for your time and friendship. Best Regards, Paul
