dc.description.transcription | Ans. Oct 17 99 531 South Fifth St Waco, Texas. October 6, 1899 Mr. Ge. S Merrill Smithsonian Institution Washington D. C. Dear Sir: Yours of Oct. 2 at hand. Replying I work to late what I note you some days ago asking you to do just what you propose in your letter. But my request included three things: 1. That you make two negatives showing the meteorite in two positions before it is cut at all and that you duplicate these negatives letting me have one set of two on condition that I pay you for them. 2. That you cut off a small piece for your own use in chemical and physical examination and prepare the surface on the larger piece to show the figures peculiar to meteorites and send it to me. I further stated that I would rely upon your judgement as to the size of the piece cut off. I do this in the assurance that in doing this you will not recover a slice large enough to seriously impair the value of the meteorite to us. But the rather add to its interest. I shall be glad for you to have a portion of it in your National Museum collection as you indicate. 3. That you send me printed copy of any report on description concerning the meteorite which you may publish. I should particularly like any report on its chemical constitution. I hope that you may be able to photograph it as requested as I may at some time wish a cut of it prepared for publication allow one to suggest placing a scale of inches of centimeters hand it so as to show its size in the picture. Yours, O. C. Charlton | |
