dc.description.transcription | [MU turl 2-3043] 1958, Oct. 5 Mr. Porter Rankin, P.O. Box 1024 Midland, Texas. Dear Mr. Rankin: Let me thank you for your letter of Sep. 29 andthe [and the] interest you are taking in trying to get more Information about thelittle [the little] iron meteorite from near Fort Stockton. One reason that I am interested is that there is alwaysthe [always the] bare possibility this 1s a transported piece of either the Canyon Diablo, Arizona, or the Odessa, Texas crater meteorites. Because it was turned up so long ago and represented to you as having been found down near Fort Stockton, I think it more probable it is a new and different find. Eventually the etch pattern will probably tell the tale, but I have not yet got around to doing any work on the piece. An old stone meteorite of nearly 60 pounds has turned us near Forestburg, Texes, some 60mlles from me; I first saw it last Sunday and made an offer on it. It is a result of publicity given a first find in that region last December, and this meteorite was found only 4 miles from the first one, yet the two on preliminary examination seem to be from different falls! Yours sincerely, Oscar E. Monnig | |
