Abstract | Am I an Adult Yet? Essays on Liminality is a collection of 9 nonfiction personal essays that navigates my transitions from adolescence into young adulthood and the sense of liminality that comes with those transitions. The first piece, "Half a Hundred-Dollar Bill" recounts a weekend trip to Birmingham, taken two weeks after I graduated high school. In this piece, I explore the comfort of strangers, and the freedom and carelessness that come with the absence of responsibility. "Through Him, With Him, In Him" addresses my complicated relationship with the Catholic Church. "Life as a Pseudo-High-Class Princess" discusses the close proximity of privilege and poverty in America and the sense of "otherness" that comes with class relations. "Enigmatic Pull" describes how my love for the waters of the Gulf Coast has served as a backdrop to my relationships. "Monday Night on Bourbon Street" seeks to determine what maturity is and the way in which we attempt to "grow up." "Pros & Cons of Being a Drunk Asshole in New York City" is a list entailing exactly what the title suggests. "Behind the 25-Foot Columns" examines Southern traditionalism from my perspective of having been raised in southern Alabama but not born and bred there. Topics include debutante balls, the Iron Bowl, and the need to address everyone as "ma'am." "Just Touch It" is a weaving of two stories, which occurred a year apart in New York City, both of which explore feelings of indulgence, floundering, and the benefits and repercussions of throwing caution to the wind. "Forgetting and Being Forgotten" navigates the feelings of despair, awkwardness, and helplessness that come with the unexpected death of an acquaintance. |
