Abstract | The relationship between attitudes and behaviors has been, at times, low. One reason for the often low relationship between attitudes and behaviors may be a mismatch between the typicality of the category member and the typicality of the behavior that is used to express an individual's attitude. Two studies were conducted. First, to determine which behaviors are typical and atypical toward various social categories. Second, to empirically test the differing effects of these typical and atypical behaviors on attitude-behavior consistency. The first study examined and organized action types that students have spontaneously had come to mind to express positive and negative attitudes. The second study empirically tested the specific typical and atypical action types that student have used by giving students a hypothetical typical and atypical behavioral opportunity toward a male homosexual who was either typical, atypical, or of unspecified typicality. Students who were given a male homosexual of unspecified typicality had higher (although not statistically significant) attitude behavior consistency when given a typical action compared to an atypical action. In addition, students who were given a description of an atypical male homosexual had similar attitude behavior correlation to the unspecified group. Students who were given a description of a typical male homosexual had higher attitude-behavior consistency when they were given an atypical hypothetical behavioral opportunity compared to a typical behavioral opportunity. Results are discussed in terms of a match hypothesis. |
