Abstract | The focus of this study was empirical examination of a stage-based schema for understanding client motivation for treatment among probationers mandated to a residential treatment facility. The study's three main goals were to: (1) identify groups of probationers conforming to distinct stages on the TCU Motivation Scales, (2) ascertain if probationers in different stages differ with regard to their psychosocial functioning and pre-treatment drug use, (3) investigate the utility of such a schema in predicting during- and posttreatment outcomes. Latent profile analyses identified three distinct groups which were labeled as Pre-Problem Recognition, Early Treatment Readiness, and Treatment Readiness stages. Probationers in different stages had significantly different rates of pre-treatment drug use, psychosocial functioning, and during-treatment outcomes. |
