Abstract | This thesis, titled “Domestic Tragedy's Convenient Conversions: Arden of Faversham and A Warning for Fair Women as Reformation Narratives” performs close readings of the domestic tragedies Arden of Faversham, anonymously published in 1592, and A Warning for Fair Women, anonymously published in 1599. Specifically, it examine the narrative arcs surrounding the murderous wives, Alice Arden and Anne Sanders, and six of their primary accomplices: Susan, Ann Drury, Thomas Mosby, George Browne, Michael, and Roger. The goal of this project is to understand how the tenets of the Protestant faith at the end of the sixteenth century influences and explains the characters’ actions, particularly in the moments immediately preceding their respective executions, as well as to demonstrate how the genre of domestic tragedy provides a unique and important glimpse into the effects of the Protestant faith, specifically under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. |
